How, when and in which form such a symbol appears in the analytical process? Purpose of the study Jung considers transcendent function the connecting principle of the psyche we concentrate on the significance of The Bridge as a symbolic carrier of the mediation. ![]() Jung constructive and synthetic approach of the psychic dynamics in psychotherapy, there is the need to identify vivid symbols of actual transformation process. It will be relevant to sandplay therapists, thanatologists, and other disciplines and educators involved with the complex and challenging topics of grief, healing, and transformation. This study explores and illuminates multiple issues relative to the phenomenon of grief in sandplay and has the potential to contribute to emerging theories of grief. Although grief occurs with considerable frequency, and is interwoven throughout the sandplay process, there is a significant lack of research specifically addressing the topic of grief in sandplay. The process allows participants access to unexpressed or unresolved grief, which is then worked-through within the supportive and empathic presence of the witnessing therapist. The free and protected space (Kalff, 1980) and the expressive, non-verbal technique of sandplay, elicits that which is beneath or beyond words. Within the field of thanatology there is also an awareness of the importance of developing new meaning-oriented and creative interventions for addressing grief creatively and holistically. The growing edge of contemporary bereavement theory, research, and practice has moved beyond linear models such as the popular 5-stages of grief (Kübler-Ross, 1969) and there is broad recognition of the complex, unique, and multi-dimensional aspects of grief. The heuristic and hermeneutic approach to analysis, central to interpretive phenomenological analysis studies, also embodies the process of creative inquiry which is at the heart of the transformative studies approach to scholarship. This innovative research design and heuristic engagement with the data aligns deeply with the philosophy and practice of interpretive phenomenological analysis and presents a dynamic, creative, and in-depth application of the method. Careful attention is given to clarify the important differences between symbolic analysis and actual sandplay therapy. Photographs of a series of six interpretive sand trays, constructed by the researcher, further amplify emergent themes and offer a visual representation of the technique. In-depth interviews of expert sandplay therapists are distilled into themes, which are explored reflexively via hermeneutic analysis. This interpretive study offers insight into the phenomenon of bereavement and non-bereavement related grief and the way in which grief is expressed, integrated, and transformed during the process of Jungian sandplay therapy.
